Transmission identification
Transmission identification explains how to identify the transmission or transaxle installed in a Pontiac Fiero.
The Fiero used several different manual and automatic transaxles from 1984 through 1988. Because many Fieros have been repaired, modified, or transmission-swapped, the installed transmission should be identified directly rather than relying only on the car's model year, engine, or trim level.

Transmission identification is important when ordering parts, diagnosing problems, planning engine swaps, checking gear ratios, or verifying originality.

Why identification matters
Correctly identifying the installed transmission can help avoid:

Factory transmission RPO codes
Factory transmission options can often be identified from RPO codes if the service parts identification label is still present and original to the car.

RPO codes are useful, but they identify how the car was originally equipped. They do not guarantee that the same transmission is still installed.

Model year can provide useful clues, but it should not be treated as final proof.
General factory patterns include:
- 1984 four-cylinder manual cars used Muncie 4-speed transmissions.
- 1985-1988 four-cylinder manual cars used the Isuzu 5-speed.
- 1985 and early 1986 V6 manual cars used the Muncie 4-speed.
- Later 1986-1988 V6 manual cars used the Getrag 5-speed.
- Automatic-equipped Fieros used the TH125C automatic.
Because transmissions can be swapped, repaired, or replaced, physical inspection is still important.
Automatic or manual
The first step is to determine whether the car has an automatic or manual transmission.
Automatic cars have an automatic shifter and use the TH125 automatic.
Manual cars have a clutch pedal and use one of the factory manual transaxles:
A manual shifter alone does not identify which manual transmission is installed.
Shift pattern
The shift pattern can help narrow down the transmission type.
A four-speed manual shift pattern generally indicates a Muncie 4-speed.
A five-speed manual shift pattern indicates either an Isuzu 5-speed or a Getrag 5-speed.
However, shifter parts can be changed, and some cars may have been modified. The shift pattern should be used as a clue, not as the only identification method.
TH125 automatic identification
The TH125 automatic was the only factory automatic transmission used in the Fiero.
Useful identification clues include:
- Automatic shifter
- No clutch pedal
- RPO code MD9
- Three forward gears
- Automatic transmission dipstick
- Cooler lines to the radiator or transmission cooler circuit
- Transverse automatic transaxle mounted to the engine
Because all factory automatic Fieros used the TH125C, automatic transmission identification is usually simpler than manual transmission identification.

Useful identification clues include:

- 1984 four-cylinder application for MY8 or M19

The Muncie 4-speed was available in more than one version, so identifying it only as a “4-speed” may not be enough when gear ratios or parts interchange matter.

Because the Isuzu and Getrag are both five-speed manuals, visual inspection is important when identifying a five-speed Fiero transmission.

If the label is still present and original, it can help identify the transmission originally installed by the factory.

Published gear-ratio tables can help narrow down possibilities, but exact identification should use the transmission itself when possible.
