Code 53
Code 53 is a diagnostic trouble code related to system voltage on the Pontiac Fiero.
Code 53 indicates that the ECM has detected a system over-voltage condition.
Overview
The ECM monitors vehicle electrical system voltage. If voltage becomes too high, the ECM may set Code 53.
A system over-voltage condition can be caused by a charging-system problem, alternator problem, voltage regulator problem, wiring problem, poor battery connection, or ECM input problem.

Meaning
Code 53 usually indicates that system voltage is higher than expected.
Possible causes include:
- Alternator overcharging
- Faulty voltage regulator
- Poor battery connection
- Poor ground connection
- Charging-system wiring problem
- ECM power or ground problem
- ECM input problem
- Electrical modifications or incorrect wiring
Symptoms
Possible symptoms may include:
- Check engine light
- High charging voltage
- Battery warning light
- Bulbs burning out
- Erratic gauges
- Electrical accessories behaving strangely
- ECM or sensor problems
- Poor drivability
- No obvious drivability problem in some cases
Diagnosis
Basic diagnostic checks include:
- Confirm that Code 53 is present.
- Measure battery voltage with the engine off.
- Measure charging voltage with the engine running.
- Check voltage at idle and at higher rpm.
- Inspect battery terminals and cables.
- Check engine and chassis grounds.
- Inspect alternator wiring.
- Check for poor or corroded connections.
- Check for other stored trouble codes.
- Check ECM power and ground circuits if charging voltage appears normal.
Charging system
The charging system should maintain electrical system voltage within a normal range. If the alternator or voltage regulator allows voltage to rise too high, the ECM may detect an over-voltage condition.

Grounds and connections
Poor battery connections, weak grounds, or corroded wiring can cause unusual voltage readings and electrical symptoms.

Notes
Code 53 should not automatically be treated as an ECM failure. The charging system, battery connections, grounds, and wiring should be checked first.
An actual over-voltage condition can damage electrical components, so Code 53 should not be ignored.
