Engine RPO codes are RPO codes used to identify factory engine equipment on the Pontiac Fiero.

Overview

The Pontiac Fiero was built with two factory engine families:

Engine RPO codes help identify which engine a car was originally equipped with from the factory. These codes may appear on the Service parts identification label along with transmission, paint, trim, wheel, audio, and other factory build codes.

The RPO code identifies original factory equipment. It does not necessarily prove what engine is currently installed, because many Fieros have been repaired, modified, or engine-swapped.

Engine codes

LR8

LR8 identifies the 2.5L four-cylinder engine used in the Fiero.

In Fiero owner usage, this engine is commonly called the Iron Duke. It may also be referred to as the 2.5L four-cylinder, 2.5L L4, Tech 4, or Duke engine.

The L44 was the factory V6 engine used in V6-equipped Fieros, including GT, SE, and Formula applications depending on model year and trim.

Engine RPO codes should not be confused with VIN engine codes.

The RPO code appears on the Service parts identification label and identifies factory equipment assigned to the car.

The VIN engine code is part of the vehicle identification number and also identifies the engine originally assigned to the vehicle.

For Fiero engine identification, both the RPO label and VIN can be useful, but the actual installed engine should still be inspected on modified or repaired cars.

When ordering parts or documenting a modified car, use the RPO code together with physical inspection of the engine, VIN information, casting numbers, emissions label information, and other identifying details.

Notes

Engine-code information should be verified carefully, especially on cars that have been modified, repaired, repainted, or restored.

The Service parts identification label is a factory build reference, not a complete history of the car.
