Service notes
When working on the clutch master cylinder:
- Use DOT 3 brake fluid or equivalent specified brake fluid.
- Do not use mineral oil or paraffin-base oil.
- Protect paint from brake fluid.
- Inspect the clutch pedal and pushrod connection.
- Check pushrod alignment and pedal pivot fit.
- Check for leaks inside and outside the car.
- Bleed the system after replacement.
- Verify slave-cylinder travel after bleeding.
- Do not assume a new master cylinder automatically fixes all clutch-release problems.
- Inspect the slave cylinder if symptoms remain.
- Check the hydraulic line if the system repeatedly loses fluid or draws air.
- Recheck operation with the engine running.
Notes
A clutch master cylinder can fail without obvious external leakage.
When diagnosing Fiero clutch problems, the master cylinder, slave cylinder, hydraulic line, flexible hose sections, clutch pedal, pushrod connection, bleeding procedure, shift cables, and clutch assembly should be considered together.
