Performance Sound
Performance Sound is the factory upgraded audio system option available on some Pontiac Fiero models.
The system is commonly known by Fiero owners as the factory subwoofer option. It added a small subwoofer system to the Fiero interior, along with related controls and audio components.
Overview
Performance Sound was Pontiac's upgraded factory audio option for the Fiero. It included a small subwoofer enclosure mounted under the passenger side of the dashboard and a separate subwoofer level control mounted in the overhead console area.
The option is often discussed during audio repairs, interior restoration, factory-option identification, and RPO-code research.
Components
The Performance Sound system may include:
- Subwoofer speaker
- Subwoofer enclosure
- Amplifier
- Overhead subwoofer level slider
- Related wiring
- Factory radio integration
- Upgraded speaker equipment, depending on model year and configuration
Subwoofer location
The factory subwoofer enclosure is mounted under the passenger side of the dashboard.
Because the system is built into the interior, missing or damaged parts may not be immediately obvious unless the dash area, overhead console area, wiring, and speaker locations are inspected.
Overhead control
The system uses a subwoofer level slider mounted in the overhead console/courtesy light area.
This control allows the driver to adjust the subwoofer level separately from the main radio volume.
RPO code
Performance Sound is associated with a factory RPO code.

Common issues
Common Performance Sound issues may include:
- Missing subwoofer enclosure
- Failed subwoofer speaker
- Failed amplifier
- Broken or missing overhead slider
- Damaged wiring
- Poor sound quality
- Previous-owner audio modifications
- Factory system removed during aftermarket radio installation
Restoration and repair
Restoring the Performance Sound system may involve locating missing parts, repairing wiring, replacing the subwoofer speaker, repairing or replacing the amplifier, and reconnecting the factory control.
Because many Fieros have had aftermarket audio work performed, wiring should be inspected carefully before assuming the factory system is intact.

Identification
A Fiero may have Performance Sound if it has the overhead subwoofer slider and the factory subwoofer enclosure under the passenger side of the dashboard.
The RPO label can also help identify whether the car was originally equipped with the option.
Notes
Performance Sound should be distinguished from aftermarket subwoofer installations. The factory system used Pontiac-installed components and integrated with the original interior layout.
When documenting this option, include model-year applicability, RPO code information, component locations, wiring notes, and photos where possible.
