Speedometer refers to the vehicle-speed display system used in the Pontiac Fiero instrument cluster.

The speedometer displays vehicle speed to the driver and is closely related to the Vehicle speed sensor circuit. Vehicle speed information is also used by the ECM for certain engine-management and diagnostic functions.

Overview

The Fiero speedometer system receives a signal from the Vehicle speed sensor, often abbreviated as VSS.

The VSS is mounted on the transmission and produces a speed signal as the vehicle moves. That signal is used by the speedometer system and is also passed to or used by the ECM.

A speedometer problem can therefore affect more than just the dashboard display. It may also affect ECM vehicle-speed input and can contribute to Code 24.

Relationship to the vehicle speed sensor

ALDL data

Live data through ALDL diagnostics can help diagnose speedometer and VSS problems.

If the vehicle is moving but the ECM reports no vehicle speed, the VSS, speedometer circuit, wiring, and ECM input should be checked.

If the speedometer works but the ECM does not receive vehicle speed, the fault may be between the speedometer system and the ECM.

Transmission relationship

The VSS is mounted on the transmission, so transmission type matters during diagnosis.

Manual and automatic transmissions may use different speed-sensor hardware or mounting arrangements. Transmission swaps can also affect VSS wiring, speedometer operation, and ECM vehicle-speed input.
