Idle problems
Idle problems refers to high idle, low idle, rough idle, surging idle, stalling at idle, or unstable idle behavior on the Pontiac Fiero.
Idle problems can be caused by many different systems. Common causes include Vacuum leaks, throttle-body problems, Idle air control valve problems, Throttle position sensor faults, EGR leaks, ignition problems, fuel problems, sensor faults, wiring problems, or poor grounds.
Overview
The ECM controls idle speed by adjusting the Idle air control valve. However, the ECM can only control idle correctly if the engine is mechanically sound and all related inputs are reasonable.
An idle problem should not automatically be treated as a bad idle air control valve. On the Fiero, vacuum leaks, dirty throttle bodies, cracked EGR tubes, sensor problems, and ignition faults can all create idle symptoms.

Basic diagnostic order
A practical idle-diagnosis order is:
- Check for stored diagnostic trouble codes.
- Inspect for obvious disconnected hoses or connectors.
- Check for vacuum leaks.
- Inspect the throttle body and linkage.
- Check the EGR tube and EGR valve.
- Inspect the IAC connector and wiring.
- Inspect the TPS connector and wiring.
- Check sensor data through ALDL if available.
- Check ignition condition.
- Check fuel pressure if symptoms suggest a fuel problem.
- Check grounds and ECM connections if the problem remains unresolved.
Adjustment caution
Do not randomly adjust throttle stop screws, minimum-air settings, or idle-related adjustments to compensate for an idle problem.
Incorrect adjustment can hide the real problem and make diagnosis harder. Vacuum leaks, dirty passages, sensor problems, EGR leaks, wiring faults, and IAC issues should be checked first.
Notes
Idle problems are often caused by more than one issue. For example, a small vacuum leak combined with a dirty throttle body or weak ignition system can create symptoms that are difficult to diagnose if only one part is considered.
A trouble code can help guide diagnosis, but it should not be treated as proof that a specific part has failed.
