CALPAK
CALPAK refers to a calibration package used in the Pontiac Fiero ECM.
The CALPAK provides backup calibration information used by the ECM. It is related to, but separate from, the PROM.
Overview
The Fiero ECM uses calibration information to control engine operation. The PROM contains the main calibration data, while the CALPAK provides backup or supporting calibration information used by the ECM.
A faulty, incorrect, poorly seated, or damaged CALPAK can cause ECM-related trouble codes or drivability problems.
Location

The CALPAK is located inside the ECM.
Accessing it requires opening the ECM. It should be handled carefully to avoid static damage, bent pins, corrosion, contamination, or incorrect installation.
The CALPAK should not be confused with the PROM. Both are ECM calibration-related parts, but they serve different roles.
Function
The CALPAK provides backup or supporting calibration information for the ECM.
Depending on the ECM application and failure condition, CALPAK information may allow limited engine operation if certain ECM or PROM-related functions fail.

The ECM is the engine-control computer.
The PROM contains main calibration information.

A replacement ECM may not operate correctly if the correct PROM and CALPAK are not installed.

Code 52 indicates that the ECM has detected a CALPAK-related problem.
Possible causes include:
- CALPAK not seated correctly
- Wrong CALPAK installed
- Damaged CALPAK

- Previous ECM modification
- Electrical damage to the ECM or CALPAK
Symptoms

Diagnosis
Basic diagnostic checks include:
- Check for stored diagnostic trouble codes.
- Confirm whether Code 52 is present.
- Check whether the ECM has been replaced.
- Check whether the CALPAK has been changed.
- Inspect ECM connectors.
- Inspect the CALPAK seating if the ECM is opened.
- Check for bent pins, corrosion, or poor contact.
- Verify that the CALPAK matches the ECM application.
- Check power, grounds, and charging voltage if ECM-related codes are present.
- Consider ECM failure only after the CALPAK, PROM, connectors, power, and grounds have been checked.
Handling notes
When handling a CALPAK:
- Avoid static electricity.
- Do not touch contacts unnecessarily.
- Avoid bending pins.
- Install it in the correct orientation.
- Make sure it is fully seated.
- Keep it clean and dry.
- Do not force it into place.

A CALPAK-related code does not always mean the CALPAK itself is bad. Poor seating, corrosion, incorrect parts, ECM problems, power issues, or previous modifications can also cause CALPAK-related problems.
