Steering
Steering is an overview of the steering system used in the Pontiac Fiero.
The Fiero uses a manual rack-and-pinion steering system. Power steering was not used on production Fieros.
Overview
The steering system includes the steering wheel, column, intermediate shaft, rack-and-pinion assembly, inner tie rods, outer tie rods, steering damper, and related mounting hardware.
Because Fieros are now several decades old, steering issues are often caused by worn tie rods, worn rack components, loose mounting hardware, deteriorated bushings, alignment problems, wheel bearing play, or suspension wear.
Production Fieros did not include power steering. The Fiero used manual rack-and-pinion steering from 1984 through 1988.
Power steering is nevertheless a recurring topic in Fiero history because GM documentation and later enthusiast discussions refer to planned or prototype power steering components. The system appears to have been intended for later Fiero development, commonly associated with the cancelled 1989 model, but it was not offered on regular production cars.
Some owners have reported seeing or possessing power-steering-related parts, and aftermarket or custom electric power steering conversions have also been installed by enthusiasts. These should be distinguished from factory-installed production power steering.
